Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Program Director - Camp, Afterschool, and Family Programming serves as a key member of the New Tampa YMCA leadership team, helping advance the mission of the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA, one of the region's leading nonprofit organizations serving 160,000+ individuals annually across Tampa Bay through programs focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This leadership role plays an integral part in attracting, engaging, and retaining members and program participants through exceptional youth and family programming that strengthens community connection and enhances the member experience.
Located in one of Tampa's most vibrant and fast-growing suburban communities, the New Tampa YMCA serves a diverse and highly engaged population of families across New Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes, and surrounding Northeast Hillsborough and Southern Pasco communities. With continued residential growth, strong family demographics, and expanding schools and neighborhoods, the center is uniquely positioned for continued program expansion and impact.
The Program Director provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for a dynamic portfolio that includes serving approximately 1,650 camp participants annually, 60 afterschool children, and family engagement spaces including Stay & Play and the Youth Zone. This leader oversees full-time and part-time program staff, ensuring exceptional program quality, safety, operational excellence, and financial stewardship while driving membership engagement, program enrollment, retention, and overall growth. A continuous improvement mindset, strong people leadership, and a commitment to delivering best-in-class family experiences are essential to success in this role. This position also serves as Leader on Duty when the Executive Director or center leadership is unavailable, providing solution-driven leadership and operational support.
Critical areas of expertise include: leading and developing teams; highly organized program and operational management; delivering high-quality youth, camp, afterschool, and family programming; driving measurable growth in participation, retention, and revenue; and successfully recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and developing both part-time and full-time associates in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Program Quality and Growth
- Family Programming / Stay & Play Childcare >
- Provides direct leadership and supervision to the Family Activities Coordinator (where applicable) in creating fun, adventure filled, memorable experiences that matter to members and their children.
- Designs, operates, & supervises the Stay & Play center, all center family activities and classes, Parents' Night Out and other childcare events, birthday parties, and any other activities/events that benefit family membership in the Y.
- Responsible for the center's family programming calendar and for making connection points with families to increase participation and drive a superior member experience.
- Afterschool Programming >
- Develop and maintains Before & Afterschool program budget for multiple (10+) sites. Monitors monthly progress/variance.
- Develop and maintain regular communication and relationships with school principals and school representatives.
- Actively participates in school parent/teacher organizations as well as one additional community organization.
- Implement established Program Quality Standards and participate in the development of these standards.
- Develops and implements association survey and measurement strategies and action plans through NPS surveys.
- Conduct regular site visits and inspections. Participate in site Financial Audit as needed.
- Ensure compliance with all State and local agencies including licensing.
- Attend all required departmental meetings including monthly Youth Development Operations Team meetings.
- Camp >
- Provides direct leadership and oversight to all summer and holiday camp program operations.
- Manages all aspects of camp planning, camp associate recruitment and training ensuring the delivery of a fun and safe camp experience that supports membership.
- Ensures that the camp team operates efficiently and employs a continuous improvement model to meet and/or exceed goals for participant satisfaction, financial management and overall growth in all camping programs.
Operations/Team Leadership
- Administrative > Manages daily business and administrative functions as it pertains to all assigned program areas.
- Supervises/coaches team and ensures program operations align with member experience, member acquisition, and member administration goals.
- Directly serves as ARC and YUSA Branch lead which includes, but not limited to: setting up classes, sending email communications and documentation.
- Generates and/or analyzes membership, program enrollment, and revenue reports to monitor and report on achievement of membership goals, reveneue maximization and expense management.
- Ensures adherence to all YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff.
- Strategic Planning > Develops strategies for short- and long-term needs of the program and effectively leads and manages a stable team toward established goals and objectives. Cultivates program knowledge base for all associates, stressing the importance of program planning, service excellence and community service.
- Attends best practice sharing meetings with other program leaders across the Y as needed and throughout the industry
- Joins any required or encouraged professional groups to bring a strong reputation and knowledge base, representing our team as needed in national conferences, training and development opportunities.
- Participates in successful annual giving campaign activities and provide leadership to a phase and enthustically execute activities for My Y Week.
- Team Leadership > Provides direct supervision and leadership while hiring, developing, motivating and retaining a committed team passionate about the YMCA's mission, safety and service to members.
- Provides direct supervision to all direct reports and develops and monitors staff member development plans and training opportunities that promote career growth within the Y.
- Advocates for association-wide practices and is a source for innovative ways to grow the program membership experience, base, and practices.
- Supervises and leads program teams to create and maintain meaningful and impactful relationships.
- Manages associate schedules and payroll for department ensuring efficient use of resources occurs within programs at all times.
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state and county laws and regulations related to payroll, licensing, child labor laws, etc.
- Leader-on-Duty Shifts > Serves as Leader-on-Duty when immediate supervisor or center leadership is unavailable to provide solution driven outcomes.
- Membership Engagement and Retention > Evaluates member connection and commitment to YMCA programs and services ensuring the member experience is consistent, integrated and aligned to YMCA goals to include but not limited to
- Analyzes data about member satisfaction (Listen 360) and interests to ensure connection to programs, services, and other members.
- Collaborates regularly with center leadership, program operations, and other related teams to ensure the member experience is consistent, integrated and aligned with member needs.
- Implements relationship development strategies to increase membership engagement and retention.
Safety and Risk Management
- Adhere to all Federal, State, and local safety regulations, as well as all YMCA policies and procedures related to the safety, health, and welfare of members, participants, guests, and staff.
- Ensure that all Tampa YMCA standards, leading practices, and policies are implemented and consistently followed, including those related to emergency procedures, child abuse prevention, and appropriate supervision.
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment at all times, including performing daily safety checks of program areas, equipment, and supplies.
- Supervises meals, snacks, restroom, and transition periods to promote a safe, orderly environment and encourage healthy habits.
- Conduct health checks on children for potential health concerns such as head lice, ringworm, or other communicable conditions, and reports immediately to the Program Director.
- Adhere to policies and procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising participants and boundaries with participants and their families.
- Ensure high-risk areas (e.g., restrooms, locker rooms, closets) are monitored and secured when not in use.
- Maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios and provides active, engaged supervision at all times.
- Follow established sign-in/sign-out procedures to ensure children are released only to authorized adults.
- Responds appropriately to behavioral and medical incidents, documenting and reporting as required.
- Adhere to risk management training requirements including child abuse prevention.
- Support a safe, positive, and inclusive environment where children feel secure and respected
- Promptly report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior, as well as policy violations, following established association procedures.
