Electrical Technician I

TransCore (TCI), a subsidiary of St Engineering, is hiring a full-time Electrical Technician I, to join our team in Tampa or Orlando, Florida.

Job Summary: This is an entry-level apprentice position in which the selected candidate will learn the concepts and skills necessary to progress toward becoming a qualified electrician. Areas may include design, installation and repair of commercial electrical systems, as well as how to install and maintain data-telecommunications wiring. Placing conduit (pipe or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas along with surface mounting and installing in underground trenches. Mounting various sizes of metal boxes that will enclose electrical switches/outlets and pulling insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between these boxes.

The candidate will work under the supervision of a journeyman-level electrician. All work must follow the National Electric Code and comply with State and local building codes when they install these systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Measure, cut, and bend wire and conduit, using measuring instruments and hand tools.
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment and keep parts and supplies in order.
  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Disassemble defective electrical equipment, replace defective or worn parts, and reassemble equipment, using hand tools.
  • Thread conduit ends, connect couplings, and fabricate and secure conduit support brackets, using hand tools.
  • Examine electrical units for loose connections and broken insulation and tighten connections, using hand tools.
  • Drill holes and pull or push wiring through openings, using hand and power tools. Clean work area and wash parts.
  • Dig trenches or holes for installation of conduit or supports. Strip insulation from wire ends, using wire stripping pliers, and attach wires to terminals for subsequent soldering.
  • Trace short circuits in wiring using appropriate testing equipment.
  • Install copper-clad ground rods using hand tools and a manual post driver.
  • Break up concrete, using air hammer, to facilitate installation, construction, or repair of equipment.
  • Erect electrical system components and barricades, and rig scaffolds, hoists, and shoring.
  • Transport tools, materials, equipment, and supplies to work site by hand, hand truck, or heavy, motorized truck.
  • Construct controllers and panels, using power drills, drill presses, taps, saws, and punches. Raise, lower, or position equipment, tools, and materials, using hoist, hand line, or block and tackle.
  • Requisition materials, using warehouse requisition or release forms.
  • Install underground utilities that include digging ditches, operating large jackhammers, compaction equipment and working with heavy equipment operators such as backhoes, and concrete truck drivers.
  • May install coaxial or fiber optic cable for telecommunications equipment.

Requirements and Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Typically requires 0-2 years of general work experience.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred; completion of vocational, technical, trade school, or electrical training coursework preferred.
  • Employment is contingent upon successfully completing all pre-employment screenings required for the position, which may include a criminal background check, drug screening, motor vehicle record review, and any project-specific screening requirements permitted by applicable law.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be able to meet company driving requirements, as driving is an essential function of this position.
  • High mechanical aptitude, able to follow directions and approved plans.
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position, including occasional lifting, carrying, climbing, bending, and working in various environmental conditions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Willing and able to work with hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, knives, saws, drills, and testing equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, and other electrical testing equipment.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and communicate effectively. The employee is occasionally required to walk and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and moving traffic. Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
