WSP is a global leader in engineering and professional services, delivering safe, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure solutions. Our Florida Structures Inspection team partners with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and local agencies to ensure the safety and reliability of bridges and transportation structures across the state. As an Assistant Inspector, you'll support FDOT-compliant inspections while building technical expertise in one of the most important public-safety disciplines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with FDOT-required inspections of bridges, culverts, overhead sign structures, high-mast lighting poles, retaining walls, and other transportation assets.
  • Support inspections performed under FDOT Structures Inspection Manual (SIM) and National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS).
  • Collect and document field data, including measurements, defect identification, material conditions, and environmental factors specific to Florida's climate (corrosion, scour, marine exposure).
  • Prepare FDOT-compliant field notes, sketches, and photographic documentation for use in official inspection reports.
  • Assist in developing inspection reports, including condition ratings, element-level data, and recommended maintenance actions.
  • Operate inspection tools and equipment such as measuring devices, sounding tools, tablets, drones (if applicable), and under-bridge inspection units (UBITs).
  • Follow all WSP, FDOT, and project-specific safety protocols, including MOT (Maintenance of Traffic) procedures, confined-space entry, and working over water.
  • Coordinate with senior inspectors, engineers, and FDOT representatives during field operations.
  • Participate in FDOT training and certification pathways to advance toward FDOT Bridge Inspector qualification.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • 0-3 years of experience in bridge inspection, construction, or structural fieldwork.
  • Ability to read and interpret FDOT plans, standard indexes, and technical specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document field conditions.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in Florida's climate, including heat, humidity, and coastal environments.
  • Ability to work at heights, over water, and around active traffic.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital data-collection tools.
  • Valid Florida driver's license and ability to travel throughout the district or statewide.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with FDOT Structures Inspection Manual (SIM) and NBIS requirements.
  • Experience with AASHTOWare BrM or FDOT inspection platforms.
  • Knowledge of structural materials common in Florida: prestressed concrete, steel, timber, and marine-exposed components.
  • Experience with UBITs, aerial lifts, rope access, or drones (FAA Part 107 certification a plus).
  • FDOT MOT (Maintenance of Traffic) certification.
  • OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour training.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders, navigate uneven terrain, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work at heights and over water using appropriate safety equipment.
  • Ability to work long days outdoors during Florida's hot and humid seasons.

Why Join WSP
  • Contribute to the safety and longevity of Florida's transportation infrastructure.
  • Work on high-visibility FDOT projects across multiple districts.
