Description

Under the direction of the Teen Achievers Program Director/Executive Director, Community Schools & Family Outreach, the Grant Specialty Instructor is a seasonal position that will design, develop, plan, implement and instruct programs and curriculum in a variety of subject areas in support of the Teen Achievers summer program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepares, implements and follows lesson plans for specific content areas which are appropriate for the age and skill level of assigned participants, including remedial programs for students requiring extra help.
  • Observes work of teaching staff to evaluate performance and to recommend changes that could strengthen teaching skills.
  • Observes and evaluates students' work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Reviews instructional content, methods, and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination.
  • Advises teaching and administrative staff in curriculum development, use of materials and equipment, and implementation of state and federal programs and procedures.
  • Confers with members of educational committees and advisory groups to obtain knowledge of subject areas and to relate curriculum materials to specific subjects, individual student needs, and occupational areas.
  • Maintains a safe instructional environment while preserving order and discipline.
  • Collects, analyzes and maintains accurate and complete student records and data for the purpose of interpretation and reporting or as required by program funder and administrative policy.
  • Availability to speak with participants before and/or after programming time to provide information or answer questions.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information for the purpose of protection of participants, staff, parents and the YMCA.
  • Collaborates effectively with designated personnel, parents and YMCA for the purpose of improving the quality of participant's outcomes.
  • Engages in positive public relations with participants, members and guest ensuring a positive experience.
  • Adheres to the Association operating policies and procedures by operating the programs within the guidelines set forth.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff; responds to emergency situations in accordance to facility policies and certification requirements.
  • Attends and actively participate in all trainings, staff meetings/in-services as assigned.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education/Experience Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferred in a field related to education or community development.
  • Teaching Certification preferred or required.
  • Must have a minimum of two years experience working with students in an educational setting.
  • Basic knowledge of current educational techniques and practices.
  • Ability to direct and control the activities of participants in classes, to work under specific instructions.
  • Experience with active listening techniques and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing to include but not limited to: clearly and concisely exchange/receive ideas, facts and or technical information with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to changing contexts and priorities.
  • Ability to work independently in self-directed fashion, and exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with groups and/or individuals from different backgrounds.
  • Proficient in using email, Internet, and other PC-based applications with the ability to learn and adapt to new technology.
  • Represent the YMCA in a positive manner.

Certifications/Trainings Required:
  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain current certifications in Community CPR/First Aid.
  • The employee is required to successfully pass and maintain DCF Level II screening eligibility requirements.
  • Maintain other required certifications as stated in the training matrix.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job includes, but not limited to:
  • The employee needs sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and be able to communicate using a computer and authorized work phone/smart device.
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants during program activities.
  • The employee frequently is required to see, observe, and hear all participants, and make sound judgments and decisions.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including, but not limited to, leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
  • Ability to sit and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the program environment, including in the classroom and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to lift and move a minimum of 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness, heat and cold.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
  • This position requires reliable transportation and willing to travel, if needed.
  • This position may require availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Must be able to perform all duties and functions of those that are supervised
